Money makes the world go ’round

A History of Income Taxes Pre-1862 => US gov't collected revenue through tariffs and duties on items like liquor, tobacco, etc (excise taxes). 1862 => Abe Lincoln & Congress enacted income tax to pay for civil war expenses. 1872 => Income tax repealed. 1894 => Congress revives the Income Tax Act, imposing 2% tax on incomes over $4,000. 1895 => Supreme Court rules it "unconstitutional." 1913 => Three-quarter majority of states ratified the 16th Amendment, giving Congress authority to enact an income tax. 1913 => First 1040 form introduced after the levy of a 1% tax on net income over $3,000 per person, plus a 6% surtax on those over $500,000.
