I saved $96.95 doing my taxes through TaxAct

By on Apr 4th, 2012 | Daily Grind

This year, I initially filled out my tax information to file online through H&R Block. For my federal and state taxes with regular job, freelance, and other side income to report, its service was going to cost me $74.95 for “Premium” federal  tax service, plus $39.95 for state: $114.90 total.

My mom told me that TaxAct is much cheaper. So I re-input my information into its online program, and ended up with the same refund I would have received doing my taxes through H&R Block, but TaxAct only charged me $17.95. I’m saving $96.95. I would have saved time if I’d compared e-file companies’ services and fees before even starting the process, but live and learn.

Consider this a friendly heads-up.

Both my credit union and my insurance company offered discounts on TurboTax. I just had to log into each website and read about the particulars.
