The Red Cross, Surly Servicemen, and the dangers of moving your product from “free” to “fee”

If you’re thinking of offering a product or service for free initially and then implementing a fee-based service down the road, be wary. For a brief time in 1942, the Red Cross charged Armed Forces members for their formerly free doughnuts. Despite re-instituting free doughnuts almost immediately, 70 years later, the Red Cross still elicits groans, surly comments and disdain from those vets who remember.
