You should know by now that while traditionally the dreaded Tax Day is April 15th, this year it’s the 17th, giving you two extra days to do the deed. Why is that?
Well the first and obvious reason is that the 15th fell on a weekend, Sunday. Though in this case, logically that would make Tax Day the 16th, right? Actually, in the District of Columbia, April 16th is Emancipation Day, a federal holiday. Which moves Tax Day squarely on Tuesday the 17th.
This isn’t the first time this has happened, either. In 2007 (fy 2006), the deadline was April 17th, and in 2011 (fy 2010), the deadline was April 18th. You would think after a while, they’d just change the day to the 17th permanently and be done with it. Perhaps, it’s for the same reason we still have a penny.
If you file an extension, you have until October 15th, 2012. Either way, you had better hurry up and file your paperwork. The clock is ticking.
