An example of when information is gathered might be when you request information, register for a service, submit an article for publication, enter a contest or complete a user survey. At all times these opportunities are clearly identified on the Web pages that gather the information. Every user always has the option not to provide the information requested. In the event that you elect not to provide the information requested, we still provide a wealth of free content to visitors, but you may be unable to access certain services or areas of the web sites.

At certain parts of some of our sites, only persons who provide us with the requested personally identifiable information will be able to order products, programs, and services or otherwise participate in the site’s activities and offerings.

Browser Level Information

Our web servers automatically collect information about a site user’s IP address, browser type and referrer (see definitions) by reading this information from the user’s browser (information provided by every user’s browser). This information is collected in a database and used in an aggregated, anonymous manner–in our internal analysis of traffic patterns within our web sites. This information is automatically logged by most web sites.

Choice/Opt-In

On occasion, we give users the opportunity to “opt-in” to receive communications from us. When you check “opt-in” options available, this is considered acknowledgement that you are knowingly and willingly providing the information and have read and understand this privacy statement. We also give users options for removing their information from our database in order to stop receiving our communications.

Polls & Surveys

Information gathered from polls and surveys is considered voluntary information and may be used for internal purposes by us in developing web content and editorial, or in providing aggregated, anonymous information that (as well as possible information from third-party market researchers) to describe our services to potential advertising partners and to assist our advertisers and sponsors to better understand our audiences. We do not disclose personally identifying information about our users to any of these parties.

Definitions

IP address: Every computer connected to the Internet has a numeric address called an “IP address.” This may or may not correspond uniquely to a particular computer. In some cases, IP addresses can be tracked to domain names, which may indicate a site visitor’s Internet service provider, employer, university, etc. As part of its database analysis brassmagazine.com resolves IP addresses to domain names.

Browser type: A user’s browser is a software program running on a computer that allows users to access documents on the World Wide Web. Browsers can be either text or graphic. They read HTML coded pages that reside on a server and interpret the coding into what the user sees as Web pages. Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer are examples of Web browsers. Browser type typically discloses hardware platform, operating system, and browser software and version.

Referrer: The referrer is the URL of the Internet resource or page that causes a browser to request a page or image from brassmagazine.com servers.

Cookies

A cookie is a data file that web sites write to your computer’s hard drive when you visit the sites. A cookie file can contain information, such as a user identification code, that the site uses to track the pages you have visited. We use cookies solely to track user traffic patterns throughout the web sites. This data is used on an anonymous basis and it is not correlated with personal data of any user.

Most web site browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually change your browser settings to display a warning before accepting a cookie, or to refuse all cookies. However, if you choose to disable the receipt of cookies from our web site, you may not be able to use certain features of the site.

Service and Content Development

We use information you provide to make your visit to our web site the best experience possible and to provide you with information, products or services that are of specific interest or requested by you. We may use the information you provide about yourself to fulfill your requests for our products, programs, and services, to respond to your inquiries about offerings, and to offer you other products, programs or services that we believe may be of interest to you.

We sometimes use this information to communicate with you, such as to notify you when you have won one of our contests or when we make changes to subscriber agreements, to fulfill a request by you for an online newsletter, or to contact you about your account with us.

We use the information that you provide about others to enable us to send them your gifts or cards. From time to time, we also may use this information to offer our products, programs, or services to them.

If you choose to submit content for publication (e.g., a “letter to our editors”), we may publish your screen name and other information you have provided to us.

The information we collect in connection with our online forums and communities is used to provide an interactive experience. We use this information to facilitate participation in these online forums and communities and, from time to time, to offer you products, programs, or services.

We develop our editorial and electronic content based partly on interactive user feedback through the web sites and by responding to your voluntarily provided information. Examples of use include providing interactive communications such as newsletters to e-mail addresses that you provide to us or sending you other news or product information you request. To expand content targeted to your interests, we use aggregated user information to determine which areas of our web sites users prefer based upon traffic to those areas.

We sometimes use the non-personally identifiable information that we collect to improve the design and content of our site and to enable us to personalize your Internet experience. We also may use this information in the aggregate to analyze site usage, as well as to offer you products, programs, or services.

Agents and contractors of brass|MEDIA Inc. who have access to personally identifiable information are required to protect this information in a manner that is consistent with this Privacy Notice by, for example, not using the information for any purpose other than to carry out the services they are performing for us.

Although we take appropriate measures to safeguard against unauthorized disclosures of information, we cannot assure you that personally identifiable information that we collect will never be disclosed in a manner that is inconsistent with this Privacy Notice. Inadvertent disclosures may result, for example, when third parties misrepresent their identities in asking the site for access to personally identifiable information about themselves for purposes of correcting possible factual errors in the data.

Abiding By the Law

We will disclose information we maintain, although cases are rare, when required to do so by law, for example, in response to a court order or a subpoena. We also may disclose such information in response to a law enforcement agency’s request. Also since we make reasonable efforts to remain current and up to date with legal and ethically sound Internet practices, we may change this policy from time to time as we deem necessary for compliance.

We may from time to time charge a nominal fee to access content or services. This may include but is not limited to special versions of brassTM and subscription services. This privacy policy covers all these transactions as well.

Parents and Under Age 13 Users

Our web sites are general audience sites. We do not knowingly collect any personally identifiable information about persons under the age of 13. If you are under 13, please do not send us any information about yourself — including information such as your name, address or email address – without your parents’ consent (which we will want to verify). If you are the parent of a person under 13 and discover that we have inadvertently obtained information about your child, please contact us and we will delete that information from our database as quickly as possible. If we learn that we have collected any personal information from a person under the age of 13 without parental consent, we will delete that information from our database as quickly as possible.

We constantly monitor our sites to make sure that every link sends you to a safe place on the Internet. It is important to note, however, web sites and addresses change quickly, and we cannot guarantee the content of every site for which we provide a link. Also, some of our links may be to sites (such as major media providers) that contain information of an adult nature in terms of the nature or seriousness of stories or news covered, reports or depictions of violence, or other matters that some people might not think appropriate for young people.

Advertisers, Sponsors, Partners and Links

Some of our sites may contain links to other third-party advertisers, sponsors or contractors whose information practices may be different from ours. You should consult the other sites’ privacy notices, as we are unable to control information that is submitted or collected by these third parties.

Aggregated, anonymous information that is gathered (as well as possible information from third-party market researchers) is used to describe our services to potential advertising partners and to assist our advertisers and sponsors to better understand our audiences. We will not disclose personally identifying information about you to any of these parties without advising you at the time the information is gathered, and giving you the opportunity to “opt-out”.

Please be aware that advertisers, sponsors or web sites that have links on our site may collect personally identifiable information about you. This privacy statement does not cover the information practices of those parties and web sites linked to our web sites. We make no claims on how other sites and companies develop, utilize or enforce their privacy policies. Be aware that many sites do attempt to capture visitor information when you browse those sites.

You should also be aware that, when you voluntarily disclose personal information in chat areas or bulletin boards, that information may be collected by others and may result in unsolicited messages from others. In addition, any personally identifiable information provided by you as part of an advertiser promotion online may be provided directly to advertisers.

When you are visiting our sites and are asked for personal information, you are sharing that information with brass|MEDIA Inc. as well as business partners and vendors such as those providing hosting and other services for us. If you do not want your information to be shared, you can choose not to allow the transfer of your information by not using that particular service.

How You can Access or Correct Information

For instructions on how you can access the personally identifiable information that we collect as described in this notice, or how to correct factual errors in such information, please email us at privacy@brassmedia.com. To protect your privacy and security, we will take reasonable steps to help verify your identity before granting access or making corrections.
